Care Certificate

Starting out on a care career

The Care Certificate is a competency certificate for healthcare assistants and adult social care support workers in England. It covers a series of standards and abilities for the induction of new staff, and it came into effect in April 2015.

It explicitly sets out competencies for roles, personal development, duty of care, equality and diversity, working in a person-centred way, communication, privacy and dignity, fluids and nutrition, awareness of mental health, dementia and learning disabilities, safeguarding adults and children, basic life support, health and safety, handling information and infection prevention and control.

The Care Certificate is only one element of training - so care workers are ready for work – and is designed for staff new to care. Existing staff can improve their knowledge by undertaking it too.
